When Chickens Grow Teeth In this translation of a French tale by Guy de Maupassant, the first book I both wrote and illustrated, Toine is bedridden with an aching back. He has fallen from a ladder and cannot get up. Bellow he does, and for the well-wishers who come to call, he tries his usual jokes, even though his overworked wife is forcing him to hatch chicken eggs underneath his arms!

Guy de Maupassant was a French writer. He lived from 1850 to 1893. He often found ideas for his works while reading the newspaper or listening to the tales of his friends. Perhaps this is how he found Teine's story.
